The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has released preliminary results from the 2026 elections, showing the Democratic Alliance (DA) leading in six metropolitan areas. The DA holds the top position in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay, and Mangaung based on proportional representation votes. The African National Congress (ANC) maintains control in Buffalo City.
The IEC data highlights the DA's strong showing across major urban centers, with the party securing the highest number of votes in each of the listed metros. The ANC, however, retains its stronghold in Buffalo City, a key region in KwaZulu-Natal. The results are based on proportional representation ballots only, excluding the final seat allocations which are still pending.
Tensions have emerged in Sobantu, where supporters of the ANC and the MK Party clashed over disputed election results. The situation has led to heated arguments between the two groups, raising concerns about the peaceful conduct of the electoral process. The IEC has not yet commented on the dispute, but the incident underscores the competitive nature of the election.
The IEC continues to process remaining votes, with counting progress varying across different regions. The final allocation of seats will depend on the complete tally of all ballots, which could alter the current standings in several contests. The results so far suggest a closely contested race, with the DA and ANC emerging as the strongest contenders.
