South Africa is set to hold its largest and most complex local government election in history. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has certified a voter roll of approximately 29.2 million people. This marks a significant increase from previous elections, with 136,790 candidates registered to contest 10,526 council seats.
The number of candidates has risen sharply compared to the 95,427 registered in 2021. Additionally, 546 political parties have nominated candidates, reflecting a more fragmented political landscape. The IEC has noted that this level of participation and competition is unprecedented.
This election comes amid growing political tensions and public demands for better local governance. The increased number of candidates and parties suggests a more competitive environment, which could lead to shifts in local power structures. The IEC is preparing extensive logistical support to ensure smooth voting and counting processes. The results are expected to have a major impact on the country’s political dynamics.
