A total of 128 individuals were arrested in Barcelona following a violent incident that erupted during a youth gathering. The event, organized through social media, took place in central Barcelona on Saturday. According to the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, 72 of those arrested were minors.
The clash led to injuries among law enforcement officers. Fifteen police officers were hurt, including 14 Mossos d'Esquadra members and one Barcelona municipal police officer. Four officers suffered serious injuries. The violence also resulted in damage to shops and street furniture.
The incident marks a significant escalation in public order issues in the city. The police chief, Silvia Cata, stated that the cases of minors will be referred to the juvenile prosecutor’s office. The event highlights ongoing challenges in managing large gatherings and maintaining public safety in urban areas.
This is not the first time Barcelona has experienced such disturbances. Similar incidents have occurred in the past, often linked to youth-led protests or unregulated public events. The police have previously emphasized the need for stricter oversight of social media-organized gatherings.
The current situation underscores the complexities of balancing free assembly with public safety. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are considering measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
