Chery Group, a Chinese automaker, has confirmed that the Omoda C4 will be its first model built entirely in South Africa. Production is set to begin in 2027 at the company’s Rosslyn plant in Gauteng. This marks a significant expansion of Chery’s presence in the African market and a strategic move to tap into South Africa’s automotive industry.

The Omoda C4 is a compact crossover designed to appeal to younger buyers. Its local production will not only reduce import costs but also create jobs and boost the local supply chain. Chery has already partnered with South African workers and suppliers to ensure the project meets local standards.

This initiative follows years of Chery’s efforts to establish a foothold in Africa. The company has previously exported vehicles to the continent but now aims to build directly in key markets. The Rosslyn plant, which already produces other models, will expand its capacity to accommodate the new line.

Chery’s decision reflects growing confidence in South Africa’s manufacturing capabilities and its potential as a regional hub. The Omoda C4’s local production is expected to enhance brand visibility and competitiveness in a market increasingly focused on affordability and sustainability. The project also aligns with South Africa’s broader goals to revitalize its automotive sector and reduce reliance on imports.
