Prasa, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, plans to invest R1 billion in a security wall along the Mabopane rail corridor to protect infrastructure from vandalism. The project comes as the agency projects 10 million passenger trips on the corridor during the current financial year.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced the plans during an oversight visit to the Mabopane corridor in Tshwane. She highlighted improvements to train operations and the security wall as part of efforts to restore commuter rail services. The investment aims to enhance safety and reliability for passengers.
The Mabopane corridor serves as a key commuter route in Tshwane, connecting major urban centers. Vandalism has previously disrupted services, prompting government intervention. The security wall is expected to reduce incidents and support the recovery of rail operations. The projected increase in passenger trips reflects growing reliance on public transport in the region.
The initiative follows broader government efforts to improve rail infrastructure and service quality. Prasa has been working to address maintenance backlogs and restore regular service. The security wall is one of several measures aimed at ensuring long-term operational stability. The project underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing public transport accessibility and safety.
