The Gautrain, South Africa’s flagship rapid rail network, is set for a major overhaul under its new operator, Sihamba Sonke Mobility (SSM). The consortium, selected to manage and maintain the system, has announced plans for significant upgrades over the next 15 years.
The new operator has outlined an ambitious programme, including the introduction of new trains, expansion of bus services, extended operating hours, and enhanced digital services. These improvements aim to enhance the overall passenger experience and increase the network’s efficiency. The focus will initially be on maintaining current operations while preparing for long-term developments.
The Gautrain, which connects Johannesburg with Pretoria and O.R. Tambo International Airport, has been a key transport link in the Gauteng province. The new concession agreement marks a shift in management, with Sihamba Sonke Mobility taking over from the previous operator. This transition comes as the region continues to grow, increasing demand for reliable and efficient public transport. The upgrades are expected to address current limitations and support the region’s expanding needs.
