A 45-year-old tax practitioner from the Eastern Cape has been arrested on suspicion of orchestrating a R9.6-million tax fraud scheme. Authorities allege he submitted zero tax returns while concealing substantial business income over several years. The individual, identified as Francis Muleso, was taken into custody on Monday following a warrant issued by the Hawks, South Africa’s financial crime enforcement agency. Muleso is currently under R50,000 bail.

The Hawks accuse him of submitting fraudulent tax returns and altering VAT declarations to evade tax obligations. The investigation suggests he may have exploited his professional role to mislead the South African Revenue Service (SARS). No formal charges have been filed yet, but the case is under active review.

This is not the first instance of high-profile tax fraud in South Africa. The Hawks have previously targeted individuals and corporations for similar offenses, often uncovering complex financial schemes. The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat tax evasion, particularly in sectors where professionals may exploit regulatory gaps. The outcome of the investigation could set a precedent for how such cases are handled in the future.
