Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is set to become the new head of the Hawks, South Africa's national criminal investigation agency. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has formally proposed Mkhwanazi's appointment to the Cabinet. The nomination follows a memorandum submitted by Cachalia requesting approval for Mkhwanazi to lead the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI).

Mkhwanazi, currently KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, is expected to take charge of the DPCI, which focuses on organized crime, corruption, and serious commercial offenses. The appointment aims to provide the agency with strong leadership. The Cabinet is expected to review and approve the nomination in the coming weeks.

Mkhwanazi has been a key figure in South African law enforcement for years. His career has included leadership roles in various police departments across the country. The proposed appointment marks a significant step in his career and could influence the direction of criminal investigations in South Africa. The DPCI plays a crucial role in tackling high-profile crimes and corruption cases. The new leadership is anticipated to bring renewed focus and strategy to the agency's operations.
